PAT - Portable Appliance Testing

PAT or portable appliance testing is an important part of any health & safety policy. Employers, employees and self-employed persons have an obligation under the Electricity at Work Regulations to take all reasonable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such electrical appliances. Combined with the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) the Regulations mean that there is in effect a requirement for a system of regular maintenance, inspection and testing under the following circumstances...

  • Where appliances are used by employees.

  • Where the public may use appliances in establishments such as hospitals, schools, hotels, shops etc.

  • Where appliances are supplied or hired.

  • Where appliances are repaired or serviced.

In other words virtually all workplaces or public buildings should have a systematic routine of regular PAT testing. The level of inspection and testing required is dependant upon the risk of the different appliances becoming faulty, which in turn depends upon the type of appliance, the nature of its use and the environment in which it is used.

The Institution of Electrical Engineers publish the "Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment". This guide forms the basis for portable appliance testing in the U.K. and is followed by us when carrying out testing.

If you would like to discuss your PAT testing requirements or to arrange a visit from a qualified electrician for advice and/or to carry out testing please email or phone.
